One of my students is a Vietnamese university student learning the type of everyday English that we use daily.

I met him when I was teaching in Vietnam. Even though he was learning English from me, I discovered obscure terms for sayings that I had always assumed were obvious: For instance, “the soldiers rounded up the people” is the perfect example, with “rounded-up” being seen as a “collocation”.

I had never heard of the word “collocation” before, taking it for granted that certain words tend to go together. Yet It is essential that people who are beginning to study English learn what these things mean so that they can communicate with everyone daily.

It was very insightful to see what they need to learn to be able to speak and write well, if not fluently.
